RGUKT IIIT Admissions Fiasco

The admissions of the prestigious IIITs (International Institute of Information Technologies) of Andhra Pradesh have become a farce, with the government cancelling this year's provisional merit list for the second time yesterday.

IIITs & the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) are the initiative of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. RGUKT offers 6 years full time residential integrated Engineering programs at its IIITs for Students who completed their 10th Standard.

RGUKT's mission is to cater to the educational needs of the meritorious rural youth of Andhra Pradesh. However, this year's admissions process is ruining the academic year for many students.

The fiasco started when, earlier this year, AP Government initiated the admissions for 6000 seats of three IIITs: Basara (Adilabad), Nuzivedu (Krishna) Rajiv Knowledge Valley (Kadapa). The institute prepared its first provisional list with non transparent selection criteria.

As the public & press made protests on the widespread malpractices in the selection process, the authorities cancelled the list and declared a new merit based admissions process.

The IIIT results were declared on 1st Aug. But, this list too has many instances where the eligible candidates were not offered admissions.

The state of affairs at IIIT admissions were so pathetic that, the provisional merit list has names of candidates who haven’t applied to the institute.

After a lot of protest over the last couple of days, the RGUKT dean finally cancelled the merit list. This delay in admissions has put the fate of many an aspirant in a limbo, as all other institutes are closing their admissions for the year and the students have to decide whether to join or wait for IIIT results

The irony is that the RGUKT & IIITs, who are supposed to provide IT education, issued a press note that the admission merit list had anomalies due to Database and Programming Problems!!

Janmashtami Greetings

India celebrates Krishna Janmashtami (Also called as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanti) on Friday 14th August 2009.

Janmashtami is the birth day of Lord Krishna.

On this day, devotees remember the baby krishna’s naughty deeds by dressing up the kids at home in Krishna’s attire. People imprint foot marks of Krishna in front of their houses as a gesture of Krishna walking into their homes.

One of the naughtiest deeds of young Krishna, is that he along with his friends (all kids in his neighborhood – Gokul) used to steals the butter/cream from all the houses in his neighborhood. To save the butter/cream, the neighbors used to put the butter/cream in pots and keep it hanging from the ceilings in their kitchens. Krishna & gang eventually used to break the pot and steal the cream.

This incident is remembered through the most important celebration of Janmashtami - Dahi Handi Celebrations – in Mumbai (Bombay) and Pune.

Watch out for the event to be covered by all popular media in India.

Women Leadership In India - Training Program

The Center for Social Research (CSR) and the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) started a new initiative to nurture leadership aspirations in women in India.

Over the past decades, women were vastly underrepresented in Indian political decision-making bodies. Though there were symbolic representations at various levels of legislature, the women were shadowed by their male partners, who held the power & decision making.

So, CSR & UNDEF started a new course & website to empower Indian women with their rights and equip them with confidence, determination, and skill to lead.

The new course, "Certificate Program in Leadership and Democracy" is a 7 modules course and covers the basic elements of political participation, gender, and leadership.

For course details & admissions, visit the WomenLeadership.in website at: http://www.womenleadership.in/

Telangana - Its different, Says Pranab

Tasting the domino's affect of Telangana, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee says, "Telangana does not mean new states everywhere. The demand for Telangana was old. Its different!"

Yes, Telangana is different!! But Pranab Da didn't get the real difference yet.

In all other regional agitations, the region (typically neglected & is geographicallly far from state capitals) wanted to separate from the state. But in case of Telangana, the region which is around the state capital (Hyderabad), wants to run away with the capital!!

Indeed, it is much more easy to grant statehood to Vidarbha, Gurkha Land, Bodoland, Bundelkhand, Coorg or for that matter the most recent states like Jarkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal. Note that, none of these states carry the state capital with them.

As usual, our moronic politicians didn't understand that they are playing with chilly sauce. It's different!

Veda, Vedanta and The Upanishads

Off late, I’m seeing many netizens writing incorrect interpretation of this topic. And thus I write here, a _brief_ dummy’s guide to Veda, Vedanta & Upanishads.

3000 years B.C, Every good preaching of wisdom was called a Veda.
Thus, “Anantavai Veda” = There are infinite Vedas.

Then came Sage Vyasa.
He collated all the Vedas and classified them into 4 Vedas and assigned a Sage each as the owner for theese vedas. They are: Rig Veda, Yajurveda, Sama Veda, Atharvana Veda

Next, Each Veda(m) has 3 major components.
They are: Samhita(m), Brahmana(m), Aranyaka(m)
Samhita is anthology of Hymns
Brahmana is the compilation of explanations to Hymns
Aranyaka preaches the way of life for Sages.

Over centuries, these Vedas have shaped the Hindu way of life and there were many a doubting Thomas who questioned almost everything in this way of life. There were intellectual debates where there were interesting explanations which came up.

These discussions take place at the Sage’s school, with the disciples sitting around the Sage. Upanishad = Sitting in the presence (of the Sage)

Our Sages composed all these discussions and added them as an appendix to Vedas. So, they are kept at the end of Veda. Thus Upanishads are Veda + Anth (End of Veda)

So, Vedas now have 4 major components - Samhita, Brahmana, Aranyaka & Upanishads

End of the Primer.
More in the next article.
